Silvery Apollo Shark

 The silver Apollo shark is really a freshwater fish, however, it has a great resemblance to sharks and for that reason they named it that way. In addition, it belongs to the Cyprinid family and its scientific name is Luciosoma setigerum .

This animal lives in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia ; although experts believe that it may have become extinct in the waters belonging to Indonesia.

In general, it tends to prefer to stay on the largest and main rivers of each country, going to the low gradients with trunks and to the bottoms. But it has also been seen on the surfaces of running waters, in permanent waters, in flooded areas and in the middle-low part of the basins.

If they are raised in captivity, it is advisable to place a pond or fish tank with more than 75 gallons of water, so that they have enough space to function. And include elements to drain, such as logs and floating plants, remembering that these tend to stay between the center and the top.

They are small fish, whose maximum length is around 26.5 centimeters long when they are in their natural habitat; and about 9 inches long while in captivity.

Its physical appearance is very elegant and stands out for its silver color, hence the origin of its name.

On the other hand, a fairly friendly behavior and the need to swim accompanied by schools have been determined ; so it is necessary to include at least 5 specimens of equal or greater size in the pond.

Is the silvery Apollo shark endangered?

So far it remains out of danger and has been included in the category of " least concern" (since 2019); according to the lists published on the website of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

And it is that it has a wide distribution and apparently it is considerably fertile. However, scientists indicate that it may have become extinct in Java, Indonesia.

Likewise, it has been determined that the greatest threat to these animals is overfishing for the aquarium trade and environmental contamination in multiple areas of their habitat.
