Red line torpedo shark

The red line torpedo shark is not a shark, however, due to its physical resemblance it has been named that way. This freshwater fish belongs to the Ciprinidae family and the Cypriniformes order , its scientific name being Puntius denisonii.

Where does the red line torpedo shark live?

It is found only in India , living in the different rivers and streams with slow courses and clear waters. And so far it has only been sighted in 11 areas in total.

Among its favorite spaces are the thick vegetation on the banks of rivers and rocky puddles, although it also perches on sand and substrates. In addition, it tends to concentrate in large schools.

If they are going to be kept in captivity, it is preferable to provide them with a fish tank that is elongated, approximately 2 meters long, and that can hold more than 120 gallons of water; always accompanied by agile fish as in him.

Characteristics of the Red Line Torpedo Shark

This small animal barely reaches little more than 15 centimeters in length and for this reason it has become one of the favorites in aquariums, in addition to the fact that it is freshwater and very striking.

On the other hand, they present sexual dimorphism, and the fact is that the females are much more corpulent and larger while the males are usually more slender and refined.

Although these animals are not aggressive, they become quite stressful and swim very quickly and incessantly, for this reason their companions must have similar characteristics.

What do red line torpedo sharks eat?

They are omnivorous, which means that they feed on both plants and animals . Also, it has been proven that they love to hunt and that it is good for them to eat vegetables on a regular basis.

Reproduction of red line torpedo sharks

Their reproduction is oviviparous , that is, they lay eggs and their young gestate inside them until the moment of hatching arrives. And the spawning occurs between the month of November and the month of January.

Is the red line torpedo shark endangered?

Unfortunately, this beautiful fish has been in danger of extinction since 2015 (after being evaluated in 2010 and verifying a decrease of more than 50% of its population); this is according to the list published by the IUCN on its website.

It is important to point out that such a pitiful status is mainly due to the exaggerated exploitation of its species, at an international level, for the trade as an aquarium pet. To which is added a very restricted habitat of less than 300 square kilometers and its contamination.

Redline Torpedo Shark Conservation

Until now there are no specific measures for the red line torpedo shark , however, in India they have imposed regulations that regulate the number of specimens caught per day, as well as their size and the season.

On the other hand, there are plans under study to delimit certain areas of the habitat of this fish and exclude them from fishing activities, such as sanctuaries.
