harlequin shark

The harlequin shark is also known as the variegated shark, and although it is called that, it is not really a shark but a freshwater fish. Its scientific name is Labeo cyclorhynchus and it is one of the members of the Cyprinidae family.

Where does the harlequin shark live?

This animal lives in the waters of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the Central African Republic and in Gabon; remaining in the basins of the Bas Congo and Ubangui rivers as well as in the Wagenia falls.

It should be noted that if kept in captivity, a fish tank, pond or aquarium that holds at least 50 gallons of water is recommended, to allow free and optimal movement.

As for the decoration, it is suggested to incorporate rocks and elements that serve as a hiding place ; in addition to plants and some types of bushes where you can freely explore.

Harlequin Shark Characteristics

The harlequin shark is quite small, with males having a maximum total length of just 16 centimeters long (a little less in captivity); and because it is freshwater it is one of the preferred options for aquariums and as a pet .

One of the things that most attracts the attention of this animal is its coloration, since it is golden in color but quite bright. However, as they grow and reach maturity, this tone fades.

On the other hand, its behavior is very rigid and it does not tolerate the presence of other specimens of its own species or fish that stay on the bottom, since that is its favorite area and it is very territorial.

Is the harlequin shark in danger of extinction?

Until now it is classified as a species of “ least concern  ; this according to the publications made (in 2010) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

And it is that its population is quite widespread in Central Africa, in addition, there are no significant threats that could put it at risk.

Harlequin Shark Curiosities
