Fishing zander - Tips & information

                                          What is a walleye?

A walleye (Sander lucioperca) is a predatory fish that belongs to the perch family . In the walleye's Latin name, "Lucioperca" means "pike perch" and that's exactly what it is. Gösen's appearance is what makes it unique. At an early age it is easy to mistake it for a perch, but as soon as it has grown, it is difficult to mistake the walleye for another fish species . They have large dorsal fins and a jaw with clear and substantial teeth.

Where is the walleye?

You can often find gosen in Sweden's larger and nutrient-rich waters. Above all, lakes and waterways such as Värnen, Hjälmaren & Mälaren. It is not impossible that you will find zander at archipelagos between Småland and Norrland.

Even though the zander is a freshwater species, you can find it all over the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia , just like with the perch.

In Sweden, there are often fishing restrictions against walleyes during the spawning season, partly because the males can be very easily caught as they guard the roe (April to June). There is also a general minimum size of 40-45 cm, so that they have time to reproduce at least once before the zander is caught.

In the spring when the temperature reaches approx. 12 degrees and the zander will be very playful. This usually happens near the beach where it is 1-3 meters deep. The male usually digs a spawning pit where the female then lays her eggs. The male watches over the eggs until the day they hatch (about 10 days)

Age & size

Most often, the zander is up to 100 cm long, but there have been reports of catches with a length of over 130 cm and a weight of over 20 kg. The male becomes sexually mature at the age of 2-4 years and the female reaches sexual maturity at the age of 3-5 years.

Usually they do not live more than 10 years, but occasional individuals of 23 years have been found.

Best way to fish zander

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler, zander fishing is extremely fun. No fishing session is the same because the zander constantly changes its preferences. What worked in one lake may not work at all in the next. Therefore, there is no conclusion for how you should fish pikeperch. You get to test yourself lake by lake and occasion by occasion.

Goose fishing is no different from any other type of fishing. It works perfectly for normal spin fishing/reel fishing with a normal rod with a casting weight of up to 40 grams. For the more advanced zander angler, there is of course adapted equipment for fishing zander. Preferably a rod that is stiffer in the blade and a medium-sized reel of approx. 3000.

If you need help choosing equipment, you can always  contact us , or ask for advice at the nearest fishing shop.

Fishing zander in the summer

Summer and early autumn are prime time for fishing for pikeperch. It thrives in warm water and often retreats to where the sun shines through below the surface. That is in shallow water near beaches or vegetation and reeds. There is also plenty of pasture for them here.

fishing lure for zander - which bait to choose?

As usual, there is a whole host of different lures and lures for different purposes when fishing for pikeperch. In general, we can say that the saying "big bait catches big fish" is also applied to zander fishing. Sometimes, though, it may take a little more pulling to get them interested.

The most common baits for fishing zander include:

Wobbler

walleye

Spinner

Jigs

Vertical jig

As in many other cases, the best "all-round" bait for zander fishing is the spinner. It is very easy to cast, produces strong vibrations in the water and is very easy to hook the zander with. A spinner of 15 gr usually works perfectly in most conditions.

Jigging and vertical jigging is also an extremely effective method of fishing for walleye. The fish-like rubber bait is not only fun to fish with, the walleye tend to like it too.

And as we mention in our guide to spin fishing , it's best to master a few single lures rather than master them all. This saves you packaging, money and confusion in the long run.
