Where is the pike?

The pike is the absolute number one predatory fish in Sweden. It is widely found in lakes and streams throughout the country with the exception of some parts of the mountain region. Even though the perch is a freshwater species, you can find it all over the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia .

In Sweden there are rarely fishing restrictions against the perch, partly because there is no threat to them, but also because of the amount of perch we have. However, it has been noted that a slightly reduced amount of perch has been seen in the Baltic Sea.

In the spring when the temperature reaches approx. 7-8 degrees and the perch becomes extremely playful. This usually happens near the shore and in shallow water.

They are among the fish species that can withstand the toughest conditions. Among other things, the species that tolerates acidification best.

Age & size

Most often, the pike is up to 120 cm long. The females are the ones that get big, in some cases they can even weigh more than 20 kg and have a height of more than 150 cm.

Under normal conditions, the pike grows quickly. The male becomes sexually mature at the age of 2-3 years and the female at the age of 2-5 years.

Usually, they do not live more than 15 years, but occasional individuals of 30 years have been found in England .

Best way to fish pike

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned angler, pike fishing is extremely fun. No fishing session is the same because the pike constantly change their preferences. What worked in one lake may not work at all in the next. Therefore, you must vary your fishing and instead look for the pike. The largest typically stay at a depth of 5 to 10 meters. It is not impossible to find normal-sized pike in shallow water.

What we do know is that pike like to live alone and defend their feeding grounds. Preferably near vegetation where there is plenty of bait. Therefore, try to fish near e.g., the beach, around shoals and reeds.

Just like with most fish species, the pike can be fished with everything from fly-fishing to spin fishing.

A tip if you spin fish with drag is to alternate your fishing by making a couple of spin stops. This mimics normal fish behavior and invites the pike.

Fishing lures for pike—which bait should you choose?

As usual, there is a whole host of different lures and lures for different purposes. In general, we can say that the saying "big bait catches big fish" is also applied to pike fishing.

The most common lures for pike fishing include:

Cobblers

angling with dead and live fish

spoon pull

Jigs

Spinner

Jerkbait

Crank baits

As in many other cases, the best “all-round” bait for pike fishing is the spinner. It is easy to cast, produces strong vibrations in the water, and is very easy to hook the pike with. A spinner of 10gr usually works perfectly in most conditions.

Jigs also tend to be very effective on pike.

And as we mention in our guide to spin fishing, it's best to master a few single lures rather than master them all. This saves you packaging, money and confusion eventually.
