Fishing perch

                 What is a perch?

A perch (Perca fluviatilis) is a predatory fish that is one of Sweden's most widespread fishing speciesActually, it is a freshwater species and you can also find it along the entire east coast. The perch grows up to about 60cm long and weighs more than three kg.

The perch's range

The perch is probably the fish species we find the most in Sweden. It is widely found in lakes and streams throughout the
country with the exception of some parts of the mountain region. Even though the perch is a freshwater species, you can find it all over the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia .

In Sweden, there are rarely fishing restrictions against the perch, partly because there is no threat to them, but also because of the number of perch we have. However, it has been noted that a slightly reduced number of perch has been seen in the Baltic Sea.

In the spring when the temperature reaches approx. 7-8 degrees and the perch becomes extremely playful. This usually happens near the shore and in shallow water.

They are among the fish species that can withstand the toughest conditions. Among other things, the species that tolerates acidification best.

Age & size

Most often, the perch is up to 20-40 cm long, but catches with a length of 60 cm have been reported. The females are the ones that get big, in some cases they can even weigh up to 3 kg. The male is considerably smaller and typically ends up around 1.5 kg.
They grow fastest when they are small. Already in the second year, they are typically over 10 cm long, and only after 10 years will you find a perch that is over 30 cm. It puts some perspective on the growth curve.

Usually, they do not live older than 15 years, but occasional individuals of 26 years have been found.

Best way to fish perch

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler, perch fishing is extremely fun. No fishing session is the same because the perch constantly change their preferences. What worked for someone else may not work for you at all. Therefore, there is no conclusion for how you should fish for perch. Here, it's only creativity that puts a stop.

A tip to know is that if you have caught a perch, there is a good chance that there are many more. So unhook it quickly and cast again before the shoal moves on.

Fishing for perch in the summer

Summer and early autumn are prime time for fishing for perch. It thrives in warm water and often retreats to where the sun shines through below the surfaceThat is in shallow water near beaches or vegetation and reeds. There is also plenty of pasture for them here.

As the perch is a predatory fish that usually hunts in shoals, it is important to pay attention if small fish jump on the surface. This may be a sign that larger perch are chasing them.

Fishing lures for perch - which bait to choose?

As usual, there is a whole host of different lures and lures for different purposes. In general, we can say that the saying "big bait catches big fish" is also applied to perch fishing. Sometimes, though, it may take a little more pulling to get them interested. As we mentioned earlier, as soon as you get a pacifier and find a shoal, it may be worth changing to a larger size of bait.

The most common baits for perch fishing include:

  • Wobblers
  • angling
  • Jigs
  • Spinner
  • Jerkbait
  • Crankbaits
  • Surface bites
  • Drop shot

As in many other cases, the best “all-round” bait for perch fishing is the spinner. It is easy to cast, produces strong vibrations in the water, and is very easy to hook the perch with. A spinner of 10gr usually works perfectly in most conditions.

Jigs also tend to be very effective on perch.

And as we mention in our guide to spin fishing , it's best to master a few single lures rather than master them all. This saves you packaging, money and confusion eventually.
