Fishing Mackerel
What is a mackerel?
A mackerel (Scomber scombrus) is a marine fish in the mackerel family. It has a body that is coil-shaped and has two dorsal fins. It is mottled green on the back, with shades of blue, and a pearlescent belly. Above all, the mackerel eats small insects, such as plankton and shrimp. That's why it loves streams - where the prey thrives best.
Where are the mackerel?
The mackerel usually arrive at the end of May and can be fished right up to the edge of autumn by everything from recreational anglers to seasoned sea anglers. You can find the fish along the entire west coast. The species has a wide distribution that includes the North Atlantic from southern Norway and Iceland south to Morocco, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and the eastern coast of North America.
Age & size
A mackerel can usually grow to a length of 30 - 60cm and can weigh up to 3kg. It is not uncommon for a mackerel to live up to 20 years.
Best way to fish mackerel
The most effective way to fish for mackerel is with a line with multiple baits or springs. These baits move uncontrollably when retrieved. they basically behave like smaller bait fish, in other words. Which is the perfect meal for the mackerel. White and orange colors are what have worked best for us. If you want to try slightly more expensive lures, anything designed to sparkle and flash in the water will work. For example. with silver reflective strips.
We recommend using a light casting rod of about 8 feet and a pull that weighs a maximum of 60 grams, then you will easily get a long cast, good feel and fun cuts. Braided line is also a recommendation, a thinner and stronger alternative to the nylon line. Don't forget the tab at the end.

The most common baits for fishing mackerel include:
Mackerel hooks

Spinner
Unlike many other species, the best bait for mackerel fishing is hake. Fishing for mackerel with a hook is a common method when fishing from a boat or shore, depending on which jig is used.
Also spoon drags & spinners tend to be very effective on mackerel.
And as we mention in our guide to spin fishing , it's best to master a few single lures rather than master them all. This saves you packaging, money and confusion in the long run.
