Fishing for rainbow trout & rainbow salmon

                  What is a rainbow?

A rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a trout in the salmonid family. It has an elongated body shape that mimics the trout. What most characterizes the rainbow is its red-violet band that runs along the side of the body, the pink cheeks and the black dots on the sides, dorsal and tail fin.

Where is the rainbow?

Just like the salmon, the rainbow is also cultivated in Sweden and is therefore not a natural fish species. Therefore, it is interesting that it has become one of the most popular fish species to fart after in Sweden.

The presence of the rainbow in our Swedish natural waters is usually a consequence of escape from farms, because they have problems reproducing under Swedish conditions.

You will find rainbow trout along Scania's south coast, the eastern parts of the Baltic Sea and basically all put & take waters in Sweden.

Age & size

Most often, the rainbow is up to 70 cm long and weighs about 2 kg, but catches with a length of 120 cm and a weight of up to 9 kg have been reported.

Usually the rainbow does not get older than 8 years, but occasional individuals of 11 years have been found.

Best way to fish rainbow trout

Regardless of whether you are a fishing professional or a family with children who want to try fishing, rainbow fishing is extremely fun. No fishing session is the same as rainbows change their preferences all the time. It doesn't matter if you use spin fishing , angling or fly fishing , the rainbow likes everything from a colorful spinner to a dark fishing fly. Try to be inconsistent in the retrieve speed, this mimics a "real" rainbow bait.

We recommend using a light casting rod of about 7 feet and a pull that weighs a maximum of 40 grams, then you will easily get a long cast, good feel and fun cuts. Braided line is also a recommendation, a thinner and stronger alternative to the nylon line. Don't forget the tab at the end.

Fishing for rainbow trout in the summer

Summer and early fall are prime time for fishing for rainbow trout. It thrives in warm water and often moves to where insects and smaller baits are located.

Whether or not the rainbow nips in the summer varies from day to day. If the sun is scorching, it is usually not very keen on nibbling on surface baits, instead focusing on sinking ones such as e.g. spoon pull If, on the other hand, it is raining and windy or dark, a dragonfly and floating line work better.

Fishing lures for rainbow trout - which bait to choose?

As usual, there are lots of different lures and lures for different purposes. In general, we can say that the saying "big bait catches big fish" also applies to rainbow fishing.

The most common baits for rainbow trout fishing include:

  • Fishing with a worm
  • Spoon pull
  • Spinner
  • Toby
  • Wobbler

As in many other cases, the best "all-round" bait for rainbow fishing is the spinner . It is easy to cast, produces strong vibrations in the water and is very easy to hook the rainbow with. An 8g spinner usually works perfectly in lakes and rivers where the rainbow is a bit smaller, 20-40g works best for the slightly larger ones along the coast.

Spoon drags also tend to be very effective on rainbows.

And as we mention in our guide to spin fishing , it's best to master a few single lures rather than master them all. This saves you packaging, money and confusion in the long run.
