Fish are made to eat different kinds of food

The fish in the different groups often have different body shapes and different teeth that have been adapted to “grab” the food they prefer. What is even more important is that the stomach and especially the intestines have also been adapted to a certain kind of food. The pismires, (which are part of the carnivora group) that eat other fish, usually have a very short intestine and a large food sac, which has room for larger prey. That food is easily digested and therefore does not need a long intestine. In omnivores, the intestine is longer. The intestine of herbivores is extremely long and adapted for hard-to-digest plant fibers.

Alternating fish

Fish are warm-blooded (cold-blooded) animals and cannot assimilate fat from warm-blooded animals (mammals) in the same way as fats and proteins from aquatic animals. Instead, it passes almost undigested through the fish's digestive tract and contaminates the aquarium waterIt has even been shown that salmon that have received high concentrations of fat from mammals have suffered liver damage. Today, it is therefore very unusual for dry feed for aquarium fish to contain ingredients from mammals (see the content declaration on the feed can), something that was much more common in the past.

Storage important

Today, there is a wide range of high-quality aquarium fish feed that contains most of the vitamins that the fish need. There are empty feeds that are adapted to the needs of different fish with e.g., lots of green feed for the herbivores or special feed tablets for the moths.

Whichever feed you choose, it is important how it is stored and that it is not too old because the beneficial vitamins are destroyed very quickly. Do you place e.g., an open feed can on the fluorescent fixture, you are not following the manufacturer's recommendations, and the contents can deteriorate very quickly? Instead, place the lining dry and cool, and it will last a very long time. You can have a small food container with a lid placed in the aquarium bench, which you can then fill up when it is empty.

Always full

In their natural environment, the fish are busy searching for food all the time and the number of fish in the biotope they live in has been adapted to the amount of food available. In an aquarium, they are served everything on “a plate” and it is then important to remember that fish do not get full in the same way as us humans. If you therefore put in a lot of food, they eat all the time and do not stop until their intestines are full and there is no room for more. However, it does not take many minutes before the bowel starts to empty and there is more room.

Therefore, it is extremely significant that you do the amount of food you give your fish. The fish have no ability to determine when they have had enough. That's why they always seem hungry, even 10 minutes after feeding.

The fish like the feed

Many believe that just because the fish like a feed, it is a good feed. Nothing could be more wrong, and to believe that this is the case is to attribute to fish a greater intelligence than we humans have. That they would automatically know their food circle.

Therefore, it is up to you as a fish owner to find out what your fish are adapted to eating. You are the one who chooses the correct food for your fish. The fish take what they are served.
